Between the Lines is open

Granary Digital now publishes teaching resources. Between the Lines, at btl.education, makes schemes of learning for AQA GCSE English, and Lesson 3 of every scheme is free to try.

Between the Lines makes complete teaching units for AQA GCSE English: A Christmas Carol, Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, unseen poetry, and Language Papers 1 and 2. Many departments would call them schemes of work. They are written by Hannah Shevlin, who has more than ten years in education and has been deputy head of an English department.

It sits alongside Granary Digital Academy, which opened on Saturday. The Academy teaches the work that goes on in the barn. Between the Lines is for English teachers and the classes in front of them.

One question, three levels

Every student in the class answers the same question, and the support comes at three levels: Securing for students aiming for a grade 4, Strengthening for grades 5 to 6, and Soaring for grades 7 to 9. The picture above is Lesson 3 of A Christmas Carol, where the question is how Dickens presents Scrooge as cut off from other people. Securing gives a word bank and a worked example. Strengthening gives a What, How and Why frame and a paragraph planner. Soaring argues with a statement about Scrooge and writes an alternative reading.

What a scheme contains

  • a teacher handbook with the unit map, lesson notes, an assessment guide and a knowledge bank
  • a PowerPoint deck for every lesson, with teacher notes on every slide
  • student packs at all three levels
  • deliberate practice booklets and Feedback Loop kits for checking progress along the way
  • an end-of-unit assessment with a teacher guide and model answers
  • a model answer pack, with answers at grades 4, 6 and 8 to 9, and a revision workbook

Everything is editable Word or PowerPoint, with a PDF copy of each file, so a department can adapt it for its own classes. The schemes are written for AQA's specifications and are not endorsed by AQA.

Free to try

Lesson 3 of every scheme is free as a complete lesson: the teacher notes, the slides and the student pages at all three levels. There is also a Thesis Statement Builder, a twelve-week Year 11 revision countdown, a guide for parents and carers, and 24 quotations from A Christmas Carol, one for each day from 1 to 24 December.

Prices

A scheme costs £60 including VAT for one teacher's own classes, or £150 plus VAT for the whole school, and each further school in the same trust pays half. Unseen poetry costs less. Revision packs for students at home start at £15 for one text, and the complete GCSE is £50.

If you teach English, or know someone who does, the free lessons are the place to start. Questions go to hello@btl.education.
