Google's AI answers now open up by themselves. What a small business website should do

Some AI Overviews now expand into a full AI Mode answer before anyone clicks, and AI Mode sits in the UK Chrome address bar. Expect fewer clicks on general advice. The detail only you can publish is harder to replace.

On 27 and 28 August 2026 Google confirmed that AI Overviews "may dynamically expand" into a fuller AI Mode-style answer for some searches, with the "Ask anything" box already loaded underneath. The ordinary links get pushed further down the page. Google's Robby Stein said the expansion stops once someone has started scrolling.

Whether this is live in the UK is not confirmed. Android Authority reported on 31 August that it had seen the behaviour on desktop only and that Google had not formally announced it, and none of the sources name countries. UK agencies are treating it as live here.

What is confirmed for the UK is AI Mode in the address bar. Around 25 and 26 August, AI Mode arrived in the Chrome address bar for UK users, a month after Gemini in Chrome reached the UK in July.

Two years of steps in the same direction

  • Mid-August 2024. AI Overviews reach the UK, one of six new countries.
  • 28 July 2025. AI Mode launches in the UK.
  • May 2026. At its I/O conference Google lets people take follow-up questions from an AI Overview straight into AI Mode.
  • 3 June 2026. The CMA requires Google to let publishers opt out of their content being used in AI Overviews and for AI fine-tuning, with clear attribution links. Google has nine months to comply, which takes it to early March 2027.
  • Late August 2026. AI Mode in the Chrome address bar, and Overviews that open up by themselves.

The CMA's chief executive, Sarah Cardell, said the requirement enables "fair treatment, greater transparency and meaningful choice for businesses and consumers."

What it does to a small business site

Informational searches are the ones most easily answered on the results page. "What is an infinity cove" is a question Google can now answer without sending anyone to us. There are click-through figures circulating that claim to measure the loss. We couldn't trace any of them to a primary source, so we aren't repeating them.

An AI answer can summarise what everyone says about infinity coves. It cannot know the radius of ours unless we publish it. That is the ground a small business still holds: the facts a summary can only get from you.

What we would do, and what we already do

  1. Publish the numbers nobody else has. Our infinity cove page gives a 70cm sweep radius, 4.5m to the lighting grid, a 60cm return on the third wall and a repaint every three months. Any answer that wants them has to take them from us.
  2. Put prices on the page. Our rate card lists every space and crew role: the White Space at £295+VAT for a half day and £395+VAT for a full day, a gaffer from £450+VAT a day. A page that says "contact us for pricing" gives a buyer nothing to budget with and an AI answer nothing to cite.
  3. Answer the question in the first lines. Many of our pages open with a short paragraph headed "In short" that states the answer plainly. If a machine is going to quote a page, it may as well quote the sentence you chose.
  4. Show the real place and the real work. Photographs and video of your premises, your people and your jobs are proof no summary can generate. They are also what a Google Business Profile is for, so keep yours current.
  5. Decide about the opt-out when it arrives. For a publisher living on page views, opting out may make sense. For a small business, being quoted with a link back might be the point. Make that call with your own numbers once Google has built the switch.

If keeping the site fed is the hard part, our AI brand services draft posts and articles in your voice from £199+VAT a month, with a person reviewing every piece. The photographs and footage are a different job, and that is what a content day is for.

If you want pictures of your own place and people on your site, tell us what the site is missing and we'll suggest what one day could cover.
