How many videos can you film in a day?

Eight, if the stage is already lit and the scripts are settled. Four, if every video needs its own light. Here is where the rest of the day goes.

Eight short videos is a realistic day on a pre-lit stage with one presenter reading autocue. On a stage you relight for every setup, plan for four. Those are the figures in our guide to planning a studio shoot, and the gap between them tells you the most useful thing on this page: each relight costs you roughly one finished video.

The ceiling is the presenter

The limit is rarely the camera or the room. It is the person in front of the lens. Presenters are good for about four focused hours, and that doesn't stretch because the studio is booked for eight or ten. Eight videos in four good hours is thirty minutes each: a read-through, a few takes, a note, a sip of water, next script. There is no slack in that for anything else.

So a full day is four hours of performance wrapped in everything that supports it. Arrival, mics, a wardrobe check, lunch, pick-ups at the end. Put the scripts that matter most at the start, while the presenter is sharp, and the routine ones after lunch.

Where the time goes

Time leaks out of a studio day in the same few places, and none of them is the recording.

  • Lighting changes. A wide presenter shot and a seated interview want the lamps, the flags and the camera in different places. On our cove the lighting states are stored on the desk, so a change of colour is quick. Moving a person to a new position is not.
  • Wardrobe. Every change is a walk to the dressing room, a lapel mic off and on again, and a check that the new shirt works against the background. Two changes in a day is easy to absorb. Six is a different day.
  • Set changes. A sofa for the interviews and a lectern for the pieces to camera sounds like nothing. It is furniture, cable runs and a relight.
  • Autocue edits. A script rewritten on the floor has to be retyped, reloaded and read cold by someone who has just lost their rhythm. Send scripts ahead and agree them before the day. There is more on this in reading an autocue.
  • Sign-off by committee. If every take has to go to someone who isn't in the building, the studio waits while they watch it on their phone. Bring the person who approves and sit them in the client viewing area, where they can see it happen.

Three days, worked out

These are planning estimates, the sums we would do with you before a booking. They are not promises. Your scripts, your presenter and your brief all move them.

A training series on the Green Space

Say you have eight modules, each a two- or three-minute script, and one presenter. The Green Space is a compact chroma cove that stays pre-lit, with an integrated autocue and lapel and boom mics, so there is no lighting to wait for. The presenter stands on the mark and reads. Eight modules is a sensible full day, which is eight hours at £260+VAT. Four modules and a wardrobe check fit a half day at £140+VAT.

Need twelve? Bring a second presenter. The stage doesn't get tired. Batching like this is what the corporate video setup is built for, and if the modules are for learners, filming training videos people finish covers length and structure.

Interviews on the cove, two cameras

Say you want six colleagues for a recruitment film, each talking for twenty minutes to become two minutes on screen. The chair and the light stay put all day; only the people change. Two cameras, one wide and one tight, mean nobody repeats an answer for a second angle. Stagger arrival times so the next person is mic'd and waiting as the last one stands up, and six interviews fit between a morning start and mid-afternoon with a proper lunch. Here the limit is diaries, so fix those first.

A product run

Product is the exception, because a bottle never needs a break. Our e-commerce days put simple packshots at twenty or more in a day alongside the video; styled scenes take longer. The speed is won before anyone arrives, with stock unboxed, sorted and listed in shot order. Preparing products for a studio shoot goes through that list.

Or buy the output, not the hours

The other way to answer the question is to stop counting. Content in a Day is £1,395+VAT for one fully edited video podcast episode, ten retouched headshots and six captioned social cuts of 30 to 60 seconds, for up to two people on camera, delivered within a week. The number is fixed before you arrive and the running order is agreed on a short call beforehand.

A Brand Content Day, from £2,950+VAT, puts a videographer and a photographer on the floor with social planning and direction on the day, and delivers stills, brand video and vertical clips, edited. If much of your output is vertical, shooting for vertical and horizontal in one day explains how one shoot can feed both shapes without doubling the day.

Getting more into the same hours

  1. Start from the shot list and book the hours it needs, not the other way round. A one-page brief is the quickest way to get there.
  2. Group everything that shares a light, so the lamps move as few times as possible.
  3. Do wardrobe changes while the lights are moving.
  4. Load every script into the autocue before the presenter walks in.
  5. Bring the person who signs off.

If you are planning a batch, send us the scripts or the shot list and we will tell you honestly how many fit in the day.
